Indian Hills Fire Rescue - Chief's Notes
8/2009 - Fire Danger Concerns
We've been very fortunate this year to have received a lot of moisture, certainly more than we normally experience during the late spring and summer months. Most of us can't remember it being this green as we head into the 'dog days of summer'. As you drive through our community and throughout the Front Range you can't help but notice the vibrant growth. In a normal year, it would be brown, dry and well into the wild fire season by now. However, with this green and above average growth comes a stark reminder that we aren't out of the woods yet! While the fire danger has remained lower than normal up until now, we are concerned that if this pattern of moisture stops, we could have a greater than normal risk of fire. When you combine this risk potential with the tree damage from the April snowstorm that has yet to be cleaned up, you can understand why we, as a Fire District, are still very concerned. To help minimize the risk please take the time to mitigate your property by:
- removing dead trees
- clearing downed limbs and slash (see disposal information)
- not stacking firewood within 15 feet of your house or outbuildings
- keeping branches trimmed back at least 15 feet from your roof and chimney
- keeping gutters clear of pine needles, leaves and other debris
It is also important to have a plan in the event that a fire or emergency does occur.
Indian Hills Fire/Rescue is a volunteer department comprised of local citizens, your neighbors, who are willing to sacrifice their time, energy and often their safety and comfort to help the community when the alarm sounds. Please help them by reducing your risk. Hopefully, the green days of summer will last longer than the dog days. If not, we'll be ready. Are you?
